Throwback Thursday: Cricket

Narrator: Tabitha of The Pairabirds

In the mid 80s there was a cute (sorta creepy now) talking doll named Cricket. She was the girly-girl version of Teddy Ruxpin. You put one of her Cricket tapes in her back and she would read a story to you. Complete with eye and mouth movement. And, according to the commercial, if you hold Cricket in your arms and swing her with love, little cartoon birdies will appear and sing in tune to your swing.

I also remember (please leave a comment, if you remember this part) that at the end of the commercial Cricket gets up and skips away. Maybe turning into a cartoon version of herself. I'm beginning to think that I'm crazy because I can not seem to find any reference to that part of the ad. I thought Playmates took that part out of the commercial because kids thought that Cricket could actually walk, Chucky style. It may just be the Child's Play nightmares blending in with 80s toy advertisements in my mind.

I digress. My cousin and I loved the doll. She got one for Christmas that year. She got the black version, with the pretty mocha skin, black curls, and dark eyes. We kept her in a child sized rocking chair while Cricket lovingly read us a story. Contrary to what the commercial shows, there is no way a child is going to be able to swing that doll around in circles. The dolls head alone had to way a good 5 pounds.

Another "nifty" thing about Cricket is that she could play any cassette tape. Her mouth wouldn't move to the song, if I remember correctly. But, my cousin and I were determined to play our Michael Jackson tape through Cricket. It was a little odd (or not) to hear MJ belting out in his famous falsetto through a curly haired, doll in a pink sweater and pink hightops. But, it was entertaining.

Here's to you, Cricket.
