New Shirts for September

I've added two new t-shirt designs to my Redbubble shop.
The first is Berry. The design was based off of the painting I did for PAD. The illustration was created digitally with a drawing tablet.



Every once in a while, I like to go back and update an old illustration. One of my favorites, Silhouette got a new look. Silhouette 2.0 - The Garden was created digitally with a drawing tablet.

Throwback Thursday: 'Cause People like to Repeat Stuff

I had the misfortune privilege of reading the latest Nylon magazine. And, it was a tribute to the 90s, I guess to kick off Beverly Hills 90210 we've been there, done that, The New Class, or whatever its called. I don't particularly like the mag; lack of diversity and other things. But, that's for another post, and a little too deep for this kitschy pop blog. So, let me get to the meat and potatoes.

Nylon, highlighted some of the 90s fashions. Shudder.
I know the 80s are back. But, can we please skip over the 90s? Overalls, shirts with Looney Tunes characters wearing backwards hats and overalls, and Lisa Frank.

I found this advertisement in the back of a 1995 Archie Comic. Tell me, who wants to relive that?

And, the commercial.

Form and Function all in one skirt. A Japanese designer came up with an innovative way to camouflage yourself; a skirt that looks like a vending machine. By day it's a regular skirt. But, when you see that one girl you went school with that you always avoided because she talks so damn long about her rich boyfriend, and her wonderful job, and how she can't decide on rather to honeymoon in Hawaii or the Caribbean (you know what girl I'm talking about)... When you see that girl, just lift your skirt and you become a Cheetos and Sprite dispenser. Here's a clip.

American Lolita

I had some hankering for Prince today.

Prince... the first American to bring Lolita style to the masses? Hmm. The evidence is pretty damning.

And, more evidence. Check out the gear he puts on after freshening up in the bathtub. It must have been chilly crawling from the bathtub to his dresser.

Red Bubble and Tees

I just found out about Red Bubble. Little Brown Sparrow on Etsy posted about it in the forums. It is a site that allows you to upload your artwork and reproduce it as prints or shirts. I seems to be sort of like CafePress, Zazzle, or DeviantArt.

One of the things I like about Red Bubble is that you can opt for them to transfer money to your Paypal account.

Red Bubble also is creating a community. There are groups you can join or create where people can share their designs (so far I joined the Blast from the Past group and the Pop Art group). It acts a little like Flickr in that sense.

I tried my hand at silk screening. And, although it was pretty fun, I just don't have the space for the setup. This seems like a more convenient way for me to put some of the tee designs swirling in my head into action.

It will also be easier to create larger prints and canvas prints of my work.
It is worth looking into.

Where the !@*& is the Men's Stuff?

Where is the men's stuff on Etsy? It can be difficult to find. The majority of the items seem to be feminine. Why? Well I think there are a few reasons for this.

One, people make what they know (I also used this reason for the lack of cultural diversity on Etsy in a previous post). The majority of Etsy's sellers are women. So sellers, myself included, make things we would use.


Another reason for the lack of men's items is where Etsy advertises. The ads Etsy has been putting together lately have high women reader/viewership, such as BUST, Mary Englebriet, Craft, and the segment on Martha Stewart (well, actually they appear to be trying to attract more sellers than buyers, but that's a different topic).


I always keep my eye out for some men's goods on Etsy. I found these nice things today.

To start, here is a funky kitsch, completely functional kitchen timer sculpture from AlienBacon. Moop creates terrific bags for girls and boys, as seen in this messenger bag. Twobeans made this sturdy contemporary utensil holder. So sleek. And, this ring from April Kawaoka creates some electricity, as its name implies.

For the wall, how about Mi Amor print by Lauren Minco?. Its a very colorful illustration that reminds me of rockabilly tattoo art. Tighty-Whities aren't just for your bottom. Ball and Chain created a sterling silver version for your neck. Retro Robotic Pop is the best way to describe the vintage Japanese radio found in Sirkus. Last, is a sleek Ttv print by Citrus Tree.



Need a coffee table. Well, Flatpatterns certainly has you covered. This is just one of several coffee tables they offer. Uncorked has expanded her line to include modern industrial corkboards. If you play the guitar, a strap is a necessity. Halo-Haley Love's handmade strap is reversible and adjustable. And, the most dapper man will want this pair of custom shoes from Zerkahloostrah.

What I love most about this ball from Lemon Ball is the rich color. Triplemilled's painting shows so much emotion with unrestrained brushstrokes. I've always like vest on men, so Racecar Apparel's Gentleman Vest is a sure pick. And, if you need a handkerchief to go in that vest pocket, be sure to stop by Matthew Bassett's shop.

I shall continue to dig and dig to find items for the underrepresented. Stay tuned!

Made a tuxedo

Like I said previously, my brain is on overdrive. Too many projects, too many illustrations yet to be made. I think I am having a touch of cabin fever (not like The Shining, but close). It has been snowy and cold. Because of the cold, I can't go for a nice long walk. And, since I work from home, the only time I ever leave the house is the weekend.

So I made myself a tuxedo. Not a real one. But, one of those t-shirt tuxes. I found a t shirt with the design of a tux on it at Goodwill. It was too wide, but I bought it anyway (it was 90 cents). I finally got around to altering it. It took my mind off of the cold and stress for an hour.

You can see the final results above. I stitched it a little too small, but it still fits. The little shirt gave me some stress-free time. At, least for an hour.
